Have you thought about the importance of securing your business and it's premises?

Perhaps you should.....

Many business owners won't even consider the security of their business premises until it's too late. They think that security is banks, shops and other high street businesses which hold large amounts of cash on site.
But the truth of it is that these tend to be the targets for professional criminals. But pretend - just for a second - that you wanted to make some easy, minimal risk money regardless of how you did it. Will you target the heavily secured high street bank? Or a back street warehouse with no alarm system but plenty of small items to steal which would each fetch a few pounds in the local bar?

So what can you do?

There are many actions you can take which will not only minimise the risk to your premises but may also result in a reduction in your insurance premiums. At the very least ask the question of your insurance agent - they may even have a suggestion for you.

Positive steps you could take include the following:-

Consider your access control measures. Are doors and windows tightly secured at night? And do they look as if they are as well? The aim isn't just to prevent intruders who give it a go. Ideally they won't even try!

Also consider how secure your premises are during the day. Is it common practise for instant to leave doors either open or unlocked even while there are no staff around? Opportunist thieves will look for chances such as this.

Think about how an intruder might approach your premises at night. He will feel safer working in shadow so will want to avoid any areas which are brightly lit. And how will your perimeter security deter him? Does he have a high fence to climb - both in and out? Does he in fact have a high fence to protect him once he is inside by obscuring the view of passers by?

Ask yourself the question - "do my premises look secure?" As mentioned our preference is to deter intruders and vandals. We want them to take a look and then pass on by. This doesn't have to involve a complete CCTV camera system - though of course it could. Dummy cameras are a great deterence. However if you take this option ensure that the dummies are high up and can't be accessed. If they are low down and in a position where someone can creep in behind / underneath and discover the truth then you may be in trouble. A dummy camera screams out "we only want to look secure - we actually have very little security!!". So don't get caught out!

Ok - so you need a top of the range alarm system and full time security gaurds - right? Wrong! You just need to stand back and look at your premises and decide what you can do to minimise the overall risk. The majority of business owners are simply trying to deter the 'chancers' - those who think they will get away with no risk involved.

So stop procrastinating and do something - anything - before its too late. As can be seen above your actions don't have to result in the spending of large amounts of money. How much will it cost to install some outside lighting? Or ensure you keep doors closed during the day?
